Geography at St Columba’s Primary School

At St Columba’s Primary School, we use the Kapow Primary Geography curriculum to provide children from EYFS through to Year 6 with a broad, progressive and engaging geography education. The curriculum develops children’s understanding of the world around them, while encouraging curiosity, questioning and a sense of place.

Geography is taught through carefully sequenced units that build on children’s prior knowledge and develop their understanding of locational knowledge, place, human and physical geography, and geographical skills and fieldwork. As children progress through the school, they revisit and deepen key geographical concepts, vocabulary and skills, enabling them to make connections between different places and environments.

The Kapow curriculum provides opportunities for children to develop practical geographical skills, including using maps, atlases and globes, identifying locations, interpreting information, observing environments and collecting and presenting data. Where possible, learning is enhanced through local area studies, outdoor learning and fieldwork, allowing children to apply their geographical knowledge beyond the classroom.

Geography at St Columba’s also supports children to develop an understanding of diversity, sustainability and their responsibility towards the environment. Children learn about different communities and cultures and explore how people interact with and affect the environments in which they live.

Our aim is for children to leave St Columba’s as curious, knowledgeable and confident young geographers, with a secure understanding of their local area and the wider world and the skills they need to explore, question and interpret the world around them.
